
Merlo Roto Plug-In 2026: Is Hybrid Rotating Worth EUR 300K+?
Merlo unveiled Plug-In versions of its ROTO S and ROTO SPLUS rotating telehandlers in May 2026, adding fully electric operating mode to a segment diesel had owned. The pitch: reduced emissions, lower jobsite noise, fuel savings, with operation from the cab, an aerial platform, or a new radio control unit shipping in 2027. Merlo has not published Plug-In pricing, but ROTO S/SPLUS diesel models list at EUR 280K to 450K landed in EU. The hybrid will sit at the top of that band or above.
The emissions and fuel headline does not eliminate the question every buyer outside Western Europe should be asking: do you actually need rotating reach, and if you do, is hybrid drive the deciding factor over a rigid telehandler plus fly jib that already covers most of your lift profile?
What the Plug-In Adds
The Plug-In keeps Merlo’s diesel powertrain (Deutz or Kubota Stage V, 75 to 128 kW depending on model) and stacks a battery pack with electric drive for indoor or sound-restricted work. Merlo has not disclosed battery capacity, electric-only runtime, or charge time. Comparable plug-in hybrid telehandlers from JCB and Bobcat published in 2025 ran 48V to 80V lithium packs with 2 to 4 hour Level 2 charging and 1.5 to 2.5 hour electric-only runtime under typical lift cycles. Treat any electric-only spec from Merlo as indoor-yard duty cycle, not a full shift in continuous lift, until the data sheet lands.
ROTO S spans roughly 10 to 26 m max lift with 4 to 5 t capacity. ROTO SPLUS pushes to 38 m with 4 to 7 t capacity, the model most often spec’d for tower-crane substitution. Both retain 360 degree continuous slewing and Merlo’s stabiliser system. Operating weight rises 200 to 400 kg for the battery pack, worth flagging close to ground bearing limits or kerb load on transport.

JCB and Liebherr do not field a true 30 m rotating telehandler. Dieci’s Pegasus 50.18 rotates but targets the 50 t material handler segment, not 5 to 6 t roto buyers.
Where the Hybrid Math Stops Working
Plug-In only pencils in two narrow conditions: indoor jobs (warehouses, food and pharma plants, retrofits) where diesel exhaust is a hard stop, and EU urban sites with active noise curfews. Outside those, fuel savings run 4 to 9 percent over diesel-only across a typical 3,000 hour year. The honest trade-off: Merlo’s hybrid delivers real value in two segments. Mining, oil and gas, or infrastructure procurement comparing EU and Chinese factory-direct landed cost: Merlo Plug-In sits in the EU premium tier.
