JLG Industries previewed a quad-track telehandler concept, designated the 1043T, at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026. The machine is designed to give operators extra traction, flotation, and maneuverability on loose ground, wet sites, and steep inclines. The naming convention suggests a 10,000 lb (4.5 tonne) lift class with 43 ft (13 m) reach, though JLG has not released full specs, engine choice, weight, or production timing.

The headline says JLG has a quad-track telehandler. The fine print says it is a concept, no shipping date, and no price.

For buyers running soft-ground or wet-site work today, that 18 to 24 month concept-to-production wait is the operational variable. Chinese telehandler factories already build wheeled compact telehandlers and have crawler-base lifting variants in adjacent product lines. Pulling a 4-tonne / 13 m wheeled platform onto a crawler undercarriage is closer to a configuration order than a clean-sheet design.

The JLG 1043T concept addresses a real gap. Wheeled telehandlers do not work on saturated pipeline rights-of-way, geothermal wellhead pads on volcanic soft soil, or remote mining-camp infrastructure. Today’s workaround is a tracked excavator with a lifting attachment, which has the visibility and dedicated load-chart certification problems baked in. A purpose-built quad-track telehandler closes that.

The catch is timing. JLG concepts unveiled at ConExpo typically take 18 to 30 months to reach commercial release. The 1043T name has appeared without an EPA Tier 4 Final certification declaration or a list price. If your project window is 2026-2027, JLG will not deliver this machine.

What buyers should do now (by buyer type)

Wet-site civil contractors (pipeline ROW, drainage, flood reclamation): You need quad-track or crawler-mounted lifting equipment in the next 6 to 12 months. JLG is not your supplier. Chinese factories that build 4 to 7 tonne wheeled telehandlers can produce crawler-base variants on a 90 to 120 day production-to-FOB schedule. Spec the load chart against your worst-soil scenario (5 to 8 psi ground pressure) and request a factory build sheet, not a catalog reference.

Mining and geothermal contractors (Africa, Latin America, Central Asia): Soft-ground access is the gating constraint on most camp-infrastructure builds. Volvo, Caterpillar, and JCB sell tracked excavators with telescopic booms, but the operator cab is not optimized for repeated pick-and-place lifting. A factory-direct quad-track telehandler from a Chinese supplier, with H2S-rated cab and 80 hp Tier 3 or Tier 4 engine choice depending on import market, ships at roughly USD 65K to 95K FOB. JLG’s concept, when commercialized, will price in the USD 240K to 320K range based on the 1043 model peer pricing.

Specialty rental fleets (heli-skid, lift specialty): Utilization on a quad-track unit will be lower than wheeled (specialty job site only), so the rental ROI math is harder. The procurement decision swings on day-rate ceiling against acquisition cost. A USD 70K factory-direct quad-track unit at 25% utilization can hit acceptable margin at USD 1,200 to 1,800 day rate; a USD 280K JLG production unit at the same utilization needs USD 4,500 to 6,000 day rate, which prices most rental customers out.

State-tier infrastructure procurement: If your tender spec is concept-driven (you are spec’ing because someone saw the ConExpo press release), revise to a build-sheet spec. Ground pressure, load chart, cab visibility, and certification stack are the procurement criteria; brand is not.

Trade-off realities

JLG service network is real. North American dealers stock spares, and warranty turnaround is generally 5 to 10 business days for in-stock parts. Chinese factory-direct on a specialty crawler config carries a parts-availability risk that needs to be mitigated at order time with a pre-negotiated parts kit (drive sprockets, idler wheels, track shoes, hydraulic motors, common wear items). Without that kit, ocean lead times of 8 to 12 weeks on replacements can park your machine.

Quad-track wear is real cost. Track shoe replacement at 4,000 to 6,000 hours runs roughly 12 to 18% of original unit cost. Wheeled telehandler tire replacement at 3,000 to 5,000 hours runs 3 to 6%. The TCO line on a quad-track machine has to absorb that.

What Chinese factory-direct sourcing closes is the time-to-availability gap. JLG’s 18 to 30 month concept-to-shipping wait is the procurement risk to manage today. If you can wait, watch JLG’s 2027 release schedule. If you cannot, factory-direct crawler-base lifting equipment exists today and ships on a quarterly production cycle.
